Pollinator Garden is now in the design phase.
The pollinator garden/park is now in the design phase. We are looking at what features the park will have, the dimensions of the park, and just the general layout. As you know we applied for a grant to build the park in Anse-a-Galets on La Gonave island. The pollinator garden will serve as a hub of activity for insects and birds, but also will be a year round park.
Below is a general idea of what we wanted our pollinator garden to look like.
We want to also have art features throughout the park which will add to the overall appeal to the garden. So not only do you see insects and birds but also art along the way. We intend on having a main path through the park, and some secondary paths as well. We will have an onsite tool storage facility that will also act as a water catchment. There will be an area for composting as well as education about the importance of composting. Any vegetables or spices grown on the property could be donated to a school or sold to maintain the park.
We also will have education on all of the plants, insects, and animals that are located throughout the park. In addition we will have a water feature that will have live plants but will also be pollinators as well.
This pollinator garden will help bring animal and insect life back to the island of La Gonave. Many insects are already on the island and this park will help to build their numbers. Other insects long thought to be extinct could be brought back to the island thanks to this pollinator park.
In our grant application we also listed future plans. We want to create other parks throughout Anse-a-Galets and maybe even the rest of La Gonave. These smaller pollinator parks will not allow pedestrian walk ways, but will still add to the floral beauty of the area. We also feel that this is the start of a larger plan to help with reforestation. These parks will help provide the seeds for reforestation efforts.
Finally we have software that we are using that will not only help us design the park, but also it will help us with putting the correct pollination plants in the garden as well as rotation plants.
We are very excited about this project, and stay tuned to more information.
