La Gonave Honeybee Project Hive building

La Gonave Honeybee Project hive building will be an opportunity for local woodworkers to build the hives.  This will allow for local experience in building the hives, but also will lower overall costs of building the hives.  The hives will be built using plastic barrels but many aspects of the hive will still be wood, such as the top bars. There will also be the traditional wooden hive boxes as well, which will require 100% wood.  Based on market prices in Haiti for wood, these types of hives may not be on a large scale production.  Still we hope to start the production of hives as early as summer 2016.  This will allow us to have the stock of hives ready for new beekeepers.  Our goal is to produce one hive per week.  While that sounds like a very small number, 4 hives per month will be more than enough to end out 2016.  We expect that the number of hives built each month to double starting 2017. Each hive will have everything needed for a hi...

Terrorist strikes black chuch in America's South.

Image
Image from CNN.com A terrorist gently walked into a church in Charleston, South Carolina and was welcomed with open arms by the church members.  As the church members did their prayer service, a white man named Dylann Roof waited one hour setting next to the black church members before getting up and shooting them. The terrorist act isn't new to what is going on in the black community.  This year headlines have circled the world talking about unarmed and usually innocent black men and women being killed in a hail of bullets from police.  Many of these police have emails and text that show their racist and militant views towards black people.  Often these police officers are not prosecuted and usually are on paid leave while going through the American Judicial System. Dylann Roof will also go through the same justice system.  The act of terror on the black community has many in that community angry that not more is done, and often white gunmen are looked...

What American city should be the gateway to a new Gonave for air travel?

Image
Miami!  While Gonave has dirt runway that can only accommodate very small planes, the new Gonave will have a modern runway.  Based on many international destinations, a 2 mile runway is typical in order for an airport to handle very large passenger and cargo planes. So what American City should be on Gonave's short list of Gateway cities?  Without question this should be Miami for many reasons.  Like New York City, Miami has many Haitian nationals and many people of Haitian decent.  So air traffic to Gonave could easily be established due to this, especially if better infrastructure to Haiti were to happen. The close proximity to Haiti/Gonave makes Miami also very attractive as well.  Smaller aircraft can be flown in initially until service levels prove for larger craft.  Also an entrepreneur on Gonave or Haiti could start a small feeder airline that connects Miami to Gonave. Miami is an international city.  With flights...

After 4 months, the blog seems successful

Image
So I have been working on this blog about Gonave since September.  Some of my readers are from Russia, Germany, Haiti, all points in between, and most are from America. I have to say I'm very flattered and I appreciate it!  I feel that Gonave and Haiti need the world wide attention and it is very important to me.  It is a cause I have adopted and I consider it my Passion Project. About 1,752 views have taken place since September with a little over 50% of that occurring in December alone.  Below is a chart I wanted to share with you as far as the percentages of viewers over the past four months and how 2013 ended.  Here is to a new year and lets continue to support Haiti and Gonave.   Go Gonave!

Turning Gonave into a Free Trade Zone/Export Trade Zone.

Turning Gonave into a Free Trade Zone To move the economy of Gonave as one single unit is to make Gonave a Free Trade Zone, which is the same as an Export Trade Zone, will bring in many different companies to the island.  Having a FTZ is nothing new, and it builds an economy.  Instead of having just a few zones which are usually around seaports, international airports, or on international borders, I propose turning the entire island of Gonave into a FTZ. The entire island of Mauritius in Africa is also a FTZ.  This has boosted this tiny island of only 787 square miles of having a GDP of $10.49 billion as of 2012, according to the World Bank.  The much larger Madagascar in Africa, which is at 226,597 square miles, which the entire isn't isn't a FTZ has a GDP of $9.975 billion as of 2012 according to the World Bank.  So not only does Madagascar have much more land, and over 20 million people compared to Mauritius which has just over 1 million people, Maurit...
