Local Haitian Seattle investor is interested in putting a meadery on La Gonave.

About a month ago I got connected to a Haitian American who has been working with coffee exports in Haiti and now they have started their own mead.  Mead is basically a honey wine.  While the product does exists, it uses a series of secret Haitian spices, and local honey from Washington State.  The investor wants to change where the honey is obtained and is looking closely at La Gonave and our budding industry.

I had an opportunity to sample his mead, which was amazing.  Next weekend I will visit the meadery that made the product.  While talking to the investor about our plans for the honeybee operation he had mentioned that he would possibly be interested in our honey production and possibly putting the meadery on La Gonave.

One of the things I have been pushing from a far is that La Gonave is the best place to do business as it is a blank canvas where you can put various ideas.  The honeybee project is starting to create a rippling effect, which is what I predicted.

Other types of industries could also open up shop as well based on the byproducts of beekeeping.  Not only does this project open the door to other industries such as raising rabbits on a commercial scale due to the types of plants we are placing on the island, but it can also lead to a small meadery that will bottle the product on the island.  The initial meadery can be rather small, and I have even seen some that fit well inside of a 2,000 sq ft. building.

The above picture is a building that was turned into a meadery in Richmond, Virginia.  The facility has a current capacity of 500 gallons.  Known as the Black Heath Meadery, the facility got a $50,000 investment to turn it into what the investors wanted.

The need for a business/innovation park is very important.  From our own honey production facility, to this meadery, there is already an interests in wanting a long lasting park where we can cultivate business.  Also keep in mind the idea I have had of a co-working space which would also go inside of the same park.  The goal is to lure some technology frims from the mainland and also work to get new startups going as well.

For now we have to wait and see how well the city will work with us, and how well the community will respond to our efforts.  Our hope is that we build a spec building of about 2,000 sq ft, and lure the meadery in with effective pricing on a lease.  A long term deal will be signed and the city may require a specific number of jobs be held at the facility.  First thing first is getting the honeybee operation off the ground and building up a robust industry so that we will be in a great position to move La Gonave to the future.

Go Gonave!
