Building future attractions that can benefit locals but also attract tourists.

Part of our goal is to build up the economy of La Gonave so that locals will have jobs, and money is spent on the island.  Having tourists are the things that can happen to any region.  Given that Cuba may eventually be a tourist stop for American cruise ships, could be a bonus for La Gonave.

La Gonave needs to work on building up it's attractions slowly, effectively, and with costs in mind.  La Gonave has many natural resources that make tourism a sure bet for the island.

Future attractions can immediately be available for locals, and late be attractions for tourist.  One idea that we will propose for 2017 is an artificial reef.  Many tourists like to explore above and below water.   Many have complained that when snorkeling and scuba diving that it is often pricy and many times they don't see anything except for some starfish.  It is key that you have a strong reef, even if artificial to ensure that you have several different types of marine life.  Also this can help local fishermen as the fish they need may come near this artificial reef.

Now La Gonave does have some natural reefs, so this artificial reef would aid those natural reefs.  Currently we are setting up funding for this program which will fund the building of the reef.  Then we would finance the equipment needed for visiting the reef.  Typically it takes about a year for the reef to build up.  The reef would require some maintenance periodically.  Below is a drawing and idea of the artificial reef.

The reef would use cinder blocks which would allow for natural chemical responses to happen with the salt water.  The holes in the cinder block will allow different sea creatures to hid, and their predators to lurk nearby.  Potentially more than one of these large artificial reefs would be built.

The plan will be pitched later this year, with the plan being drawn up in early 2016.  Financing and planning is scheduled in late 2016 with construction starting early 2017.  So literally in 1.5 years this reef would be constructed, and fully active with fish by 2018.  This timeline allows for the island to build up other attractions and hotels.  Keep in mind that we are planning additional ideas to develop the island.

Stay tuned!  Go Gonave!
