Talipia and Gonave

If you thought the honeybee project was a large task for an island like La Gonave, what would be the thought of Talipia farms.  While it sounds crazy due to the island's lack of water, it is something that could be highly successful.  Our initial plan like all would be to start very small.  We would get a few fingerlings to start.  These fish will of course grow to be the breeders.

From there we will start raising the fish to sell on the open market.  It could be a project that we keep in-house, and not a product that the entire co-op would be a part of.  Reasons for this is the cost of products.  Many times it can be very expensive to get the tanks, solar panels to run pumps, pumps, tubing, and water.  So for that, we may take up the task of raising the fish and at a later point getting other co-op members involved.

Talipia could be a push into the right direction for farmers on La Gonave.  From there other types of fish, and seafood could be farm raised.  This would help make the island less dependent on importing foods.  Our goal is to tackle food issues so that the island wouldn't have to import staple crops.

Other types of farming we are looking into for the co-op are beans, rabbits, goat farming, peppers, sweet potatoes, melons, tomatoes, garlic, etc.  It will be very interesting.  This is why setting up the honeybee is critical.  We need those guys to help pollinate our future crops.  The co-op will be across the island with some farmers specializing in certain crops over others.

We are also looking into homesteads as well.  This is where in some of the most remote places on the island, farmers grow many different types of crops and have many different types of livestock.  This will handle any food issues in some of the more remote places.  Families would basically be able to raise 100% of all their food.  Anything left could then be sold to local farmer's markets.  Homesteads would be ideal in a few different places on the island.  We are still looking at how we could make this a possibility as well.

Go Gonave!
