Solving the battle of the free roaming farm animals.

Like parts of the mainland, La Gonave has too many free roaming farm animals.  Cows, chickens, goats, pigs, etc all do major damage to food production and the environment on the island.

Chickens are not really an issue, and in fact are beneficial to roam free.  They do spread manure, and clear bugs and pests away from farm crops.

Cows not only destroy farm crops but also eat freshly planted trees.  Goats are horrible, but exists everywhere.  They are known for getting into areas that are fenced off, and will eat everything.  Pigs will also eat just about anything and destroy crops.

If La Gonave is to improve, these free roaming animals need to be put in pens or tied up.  Imagine a tourist who comes to the island and discovers goats on the porch of the hotel.  Not only is it bad business, but it destroys the precious food that is produced for PEOPLE.  While there are laws out there the is to prevent the free roaming animals, it is up to the Haitians on the island to stop the free roaming animal.  Some will allow their animals to roam free because they don't have the money to buy feed for them.  Problem is that it destroys crops that people need to feed themselves and the animals.  As a result food shortages, and high food prices then affects EVERYONE.  It is a cycle like many others that exist in Haiti that has to end.  It isn't about culture, it is about what makes the best sense.  Yes people own livestock to provide milk or meat for themselves.  Yet if one can't afford to feed that animal, or if they don't have land that is fenced in to keep the animal, then they shouldn't have the animal.

We are all about moving people forward and this is why we are working on the island, however having free roaming farm animals is not good.  We will make a major push to the mayor to end this issue on the island once and for all.  Possibly having or improving a livestock market and establishing a slaughter house.  While it sounds drastic, it is needed to improve lives on the island.  This would not only protect the vegetables on the island, but would also provide meat on the island as well.

Go Gonave!
