Reasons the Top Bar hive makes the best sense for La Gonave
I will list some of the reasons below why we choose the Top Bar Hive, specifically the Top Bar Barrel Bee Hive. I mentioned some of the reasons behind it in the previous blog, but now I will go into more detail.
The Top Bar Barrel hive:
- Was chosen for its fast and affordable design. Due to using only wood for most the leg supports, it lowers the cost of the hive. Most hives are all wood, so the typical top bar hive would be all wood as oppose to our choice which will use wood for the support and top bars. Since wood is expensive it would slow the project down as locals wouldn't be able to financially support the project.
- The top bar doesn't use frames and use a "top bar" that has a strip of beeswax. Again from a financial point of view, less wood from a traditional frame means the cost of the hive is cheaper and faster to build.
- The top bar hive is similar to how bees naturally make honeycomb, but the barrel top bar hive goes a step further. Honey bees typically build in logs, and given the barrel is round like a log, the barrel mimics a honeybees natural home. This approach promotes more happy bees.
- The design is easier for inspection. No heavy lifting is needed, so 1 person can inspect the hive. Other types of hives would have heavy boxes that reach skyward and would need more than 1 person.
- Because the hive is level with the beekeeper this makes inspections easier on the bees as well. They are usually less disturbed by this method.
- This type of hive is best for the less experienced beekeeper due to the layout so it is the perfect type of hive to start with.
- This hive is easy to make and with limited tools and resources. A simple food grade barrel is cut in half, and then wood supports are built to hold the hive. Then basic bars are made for the top which are coated with beeswax. Add ventilation and the hive is done. On top of that by cutting the barrel two hives are made at the same time, which makes expansions cheaper, faster, and easier!
