Solar Ovens for La Gonave
First off, sorry for the long delay in between posts. I have been working with two different organizations, and soon to be three to get a few projects going on La Gonave.
You are aware of the Honey Bee Project, but other projects will be farming activities and solar ovens. The proposal that I am sending over will allow for honey to be available to all residents on the island of La Gonave. Now the initial capacity of honey production will not allow for this, however as the honey bee network grows, it will be available to all residents on the island for no charge. The language within the proposal allows for additional growth within the honey production for spin off businesses. If honey production exceeds local demand, it will then be sold to different locations in Haiti itself.
Farming is the next project which as I mentioned will focus on cover crops. We are excited about this as it will allow for cover crops which can change the landscape of La Gonave forever. Later as the soil is established, we will introduce trees that are fast growers, which will allow for shade cover on the soil. This along with the cover crops will limit weeds, wind, and erosion of soil. This will eventually allow for a variety of crops, and a stronger water table.
Finally the big problem within Haiti and La Gonave has been the use of making charcoal out of trees and timber. While Gonave once had forest, it no longer looks this way. The use of trees for cooking food will end once people on the island have a way to cook food. Welcome the solar oven. The plan is to manufacture the ovens on the island of La Gonave. These ovens are easy and very cheap to build, but are very sturdy. With a solar oven, you can cook anything from soup to cookies. The best thing is it doesn't require electricity and relies on the sun. La Gonave doesn't have much electricity but does have a vast amount of sun. Not only do these oven use free power, they are not polluters, and it will stop the destruction of the local vegetation. These ovens can't cause a fire, which is even better. More than likely these ovens will be produced and given to each household on the island of La Gonave free of charge.
Sorry again for the long delay, but we are moving fast here with plans to improve the island of La Gonave.
Go Gonave!
