Stopping violence before it starts, and killing violence that exists
It's no secrete that Haiti has many different issues including violence. Gonave is no different. While the violence on Gonave doesn't compare to the amount and types of violence on the mainland, ending violence and stopping it before it begins is key.
Some say education, stable home, and good role models are key to ending violence. While this is true, it is up to the future leaders on Gonave to first reach out to parents. Explain the importance of education, therefore parents are less likely to keep kids at home to help pay the bills. Also leaders should explain how education is a key for success. It isn't a promise that an educated individual will be perfect, but it helps to give a person a place in life.
All of this points to one bigger thing...government. While government can't raise our kids, having a good government is very important. A government that cares about the progress of the people that inhabit their country. A love of people, and pride that pushes and builds laws that are meant to turn the population into a stable society that can compete equally in the world. Look at South Korea. After the Korean War, S. Korea was a dump, with horrible infrastructure, lack of jobs and food. In fact, North Korea had more wealth. S. Korea then began to put a major emphasis on education, self worth, and pride. What happened was a powerhouse. Seoul is a juggernaut in the region, and the world. Not only was this done in many people's lifetimes, Seoul and Korea are still evolving at a fast pace and leading technology.
Now Gonave will not be Seoul or South Korea, however having a strong sense of pride, self worth, education, and not allowing corruption or cronyism will allow Gonave to be a powerful thumbprint in the Caribbean. No success will come of making Gonave into its own country, in fact it would damage Gonave, Haiti, and potentially all of the W. Indies credibility. Gonave should either demand change in education, infrastructure, and programs from Haiti, or it should demand from Haiti that it needs to be a semi-autonomous region. It should demand help us, or allow us to help ourselves and be a Special Administrative Region. Therefore Gonave can attach all aspects of society ills on the island, including violence. Allow Gonave to determine what programs are needed to combat crime. Allow Gonave and it's people to direct their own future.
Go Gonave!
