Food storage on Gonave

One of the NGO's (non-governmental organizations) on Gonave mentioned that storing food on the island is a major problem.  Many will grow food and will either consume it or sell it.  So when there is a lack of rain, there are few food sources.

So one way to solve this problem slowly is to build small metal storage facilities.  A supplier Metal Building Depot can supply a nice sized structure that can store food.  Now in a previous post I mentioned these mega structures that are several hundred thousand square feet.  These structures are several million dollars, and currently wouldn't be feasible.  Building from the Metal Building Depot are usually under $100,000 US dollars, which doesn't include construction or shipping to Gonave.

Below is a image of a warehouse I designed for a dry warehouse, which could store precious food stocks.
This facility would have one bay door, an interior crane which has a 4 ton capacity.  In addition it also includes a steel door and window, which show as open in the photo.  The building would be 40 ft wide and 60 ft long, with a 4.0 roof pitch.  The back and front eave height would be 24 ft.  So this would allow for several pallets of goods to be stacked on top of each other.

The building uses the Green, yellow, and blue colors of the flag I created for Gonave.  The CAD system I was using wouldn't allow me to upload the actual blueprints to the blog site.  The cost of this structure with just materials is about $160,000 US.  This does not include assembly, taxes, nor shipping to Gonave.  Overall this structure would cost about $250,000 or so to get and assemble to Gonave.  Understand that if the interior crane was omitted it would drive the cost down considerably.

The building also has 3 inches of wall and roof insulation.  It also is designed to fasten to a concrete pad in a way to keep out small animals and bugs.

This is something that Gonave needs to consider going forward to help with food and supply shortages.

Go Gonave!
