Memorandum of Understanding is being developed for La Gonave

The city of Anse-a-Galets, Let's Build Gonave, Haiti, and Hurko will enter into a Memorandum of Understanding, or MOU.  I will be working with/for Hurko to make the honeybee project a reality.

The purpose of the MOU is to develop a viable honeybee operation on the island of La Gonave.  Given that city land will be needed for some parts of the project, a MOU is needed to show that all parties are serious about moving forward.

I had mentioned in a few earlier posts about the city park/plaza revitalization and how it would require the city's approval.  While this is still the case, a MOU will be sent to the city in the middle of February with work on the plaza to be done later.

The plaza will form part of the proposed honeybee highway which will serve as the spine of the honeybee operation.  This highway is needed since the lack of fodder for the honeybees are somewhat limited on the island.

This MOU paints a clearer picture for the future of La Gonave and it's farming communities.  It also helps with beautification of a city asset that is utilized by citizens on the island of La Gonave.

Future highways could be planned that focus on other villages and towns on the island.  The first highway will run from the coast of Anse-a-Galets and connect to the city plaza.  From there it could go in a few different directions from there.  The highway is like a spine as farms can radiate out from it.  As pollinators, specifically honeybees, visit the highway, the will pollinate farms that are near the highway and near their hives.  Given that honeybees can fly several miles for food and water sources, it allows farmers all over the island to raise crops they never have been able to before.  It also allows for beekeepers to be from any part of the island.

While this has been a long and slow process, understand that things don't happen overnight.  Many long hours are spent to get and formulate an idea.  Then you have to see if the project is viable and self sustaining.  From there you have to then have to make sure it makes financial sense and where to get those funds.  Then work out a program to train people and find the resources you need.  So while we have talked about it a long time, the project is moving forward and in the right direction!

Go Gonave!
