Moving La Gonave, Haiti from the title of being 4th world!

When you look at Haiti in general many would state that it is a 4th world country.  The lack of infrastructure, job security, literacy, health, income, and unstable food production are some of the reasons for the ranking.  La Gonave is in a more dire situation than the mainland.

How to move La Gonave off the 4th world list?  I have said it time and time again.  Farming!  One of the oldest professions in the world is Farming.  In fact farming gave rise to cities.  Farmers would work together, sell goods, people moved to those fertile lands to purchase the food that was produced.  Soon you had cities and other professions were created.  If Haiti, and in fact La Gonave wants to improve its standing, then farming is it.

Having food security is the first thing, above housing, education, etc.  Without good food, nothing else really will matter.  Next good education is needed.  Yes even before housing is education.

Let's Build Gonave, Haiti is aiming to improve all of the lives on the island of La Gonave.  It starts with small steps and focus on one industry.  If S. Korea can move forward with it's huge list of issues, so can any other country.  Keep in mind, S. Korea was occupied by the North, by Japan, etc.  The capital Seoul was destroyed many times.  In fact most of South Korea was completely deforested when occupied by the Japanese so that S. Korea would not be able to recover.  Many people of the time said it would take S. Korea 100 years to come out of their misery.

Well S. Korea proved that this wasn't true.  They invested heavily in education in the beginning and farming.  They expanded their scope once they mastered each problem.  Today S. Korea is no longer one of the poorest places on Earth, but a 1st world country.

Again if Haiti is to improve there needs to be a shift from giving millions of dollars in food aid.  Food aid is systematically destroying the country.  The reason is that people will eat as long as there is a hand out.  Many not-for-profits, especially the religious ones are guilty of this.  Sending truck loads of food does nothing.  Sending a truck load of seeds, shovels, soil, gloves, greenhouses, etc does do something.  One of the reasons we started with honeybees, which is a very expensive industry to get started in, was to have pollinators that will make farming on La Gonave easier.  Given that La Gonave is somewhat of a remote island, the honeybees will not venture away.  They are pretty must stuck on the island.  This is great because the honeybees can never over populate due to limited food supply, never leave, less likely to suffer disease from the mainland, etc.  Once you have established honeybee colonies, then you can focus on other food crops.  We however will focus on another expensive industry to get in, which is farming Tilapia.  Tilapia will add needed and plentiful protein to the food supply on the island.  Currently fishing offshore will bring in lobster, crabs, and some fish, but again, it is not enough to feed a large population of people.  Several tilapia farms will supply enough fish to feed the people on the island, and even sell some to the mainland.  Other protein supplies would be rabbits, fowl, and large scale chicken farms.

Other types of crops from cassava, beans, melons, etc are all on our radar.  But first....honeybees.  I see this as a large task, but not impossible.  Also in the future education programs will be developed to help with literacy on the island of La Gonave.

Go Gonave!
