La Gonave 5 year Economic Development Plan

Let's Build Gonave, Haiti is partnering with different not-for-profits to start the impetus for a economic engine in Haiti.

The 5 year plans will span 5 years which are based on calendar years from 2015 to 2020.  The economic plan will focus on one industry that will make La Gonave self sufficient in that industry.  The plan's goal is to put most of the revenue from the sell of goods to put back into the 5 year plan.  A civic spending plan will then be created, where part of the industrial revenue will go into one civic project.  While there is a range of issues, more than likely the civic project will focus exclusively on education.

This will create a major turning point as it provides a strong strategic way for La Gonave to build an economy, in a slow, well executed way.  While it states a 5 year plan, there will more than likely be a series of 5 year plans.  A creation of a Economic Development Planning Board could possibly help move these 5 year plans forward.  The first 5 year plan possibly will be focused on honey production.

As mentioned in a previous post, Hurko Co will build and manufacture honeybee hive boxes in America, and then shipped the boxes to La Gonave to be assembled.  Later, the plan is to have all of the hive boxes made on La Gonave.  Not only this, but potentially other industries could come from honey production.  By year 5, La Gonave will be self sufficient in the production of honey and beeswax.  During the plan, farmers will create bee fodder, and have to take several hours of training on beekeeping as well as honey production.

Side programs such as teaching school children about honeybees, preservation, and education will also be a focus.

Based on the 5 year plan, half of the revenue from honey will be put back into production, and the other half will go towards education (building schools, teachers, materials).

Farms will be classified into two types.  Local producers or export producers.  Local producers will be paid the same as export producers, however the honey produced by local producers will either be given to the citizens of La Gonave for free, or at a massive discount.

The next 5 year plan will focus on a completely different industry that again will allow La Gonave to be completely self sufficient in that industry.  The goal is to have La Gonave playing a stronger role in exporting.

By La Gonave owning it's own factories and specializing in light industries, it allows La Gonave to control it's own fate.  It creates small companies that will be able to sell honey to the overseas region.  There will be more to this as we are building the program.  Stay tuned!

Go Gonave!
