Employment goals on Gonave

Employment goals on Gonave

I think that to get the economy of Gonave stated there needs to be a few crucial items.  I have mentioned them before and that is a source of power, and getting the proper water sanitation that will allow for large scale businesses.

Once that is accomplished I think that industry can be lured to the island using specific programs that work in other island areas.  Given the close location to the US, Gonave stands a strong chance of leading the Caribbean in economic growth.  These industries should be built and lured in phases.

Phase 1

  • Bring in a 75 to 100 person call center.
  • Create a farm program where you create over 50 different farms from fish farms to vegetable farms, along with cattle, chicken, and hog farms.  Employment of 100 jobs minimum.
  • Bring in a textile company with a minimum of 250 jobs.
  • Build a tourist resort and hotel which would bring about 150 to 200 jobs.
  • Create a cannery which will have a minimum of 50 jobs.
  • Government jobs for Bureau of Land Management 20 to 30 jobs.
  • Create small business program for locals to become business owners, start with 30 different business owners.
  • A beer brewing operation with 20 jobs.
Phase 2
  • Bring in another textile company with minimum of 250 jobs.
  • Light manufacturing (diapers, paper cardboard boxes, soap production) for 500 jobs.
  • Auto manufacturing with a minimum job amount of 800 jobs.
  • Small boat and barge manufacturing about 30 to 50 jobs.
While this seems very ambitious, and it is, it is very possible.  I have actually talked to a few companies who mentioned if the conditions are right, they would put a business on Gonave.  Phase 1 could take 5 or even 10 years to complete.  It may take even longer for phase 2 given the complexity of the type of jobs.  Again if the correct conditions are there, which mean proper infrastructure, stable political environment, good tax policies and incentive programs, etc, then these jobs can be a reality.  On the lean side you are looking at 2,275 jobs.

Now you may say how do you know the job numbers.  Well they are an educated guess.  The city that I am from have many of these same type of companies.  General Motors actually produce just one car in my home town and they have 800 employees, a diaper manufacture has about 300 employees, a textile company has 2,500 employees, etc.  Not to mention some African firms that could consider moving their corporate offices if the business climate is right and good incentives are offered.  I know of two startups, one a auto manufacturer, and another a tablet manufacturer that would love investment to expand. So these job numbers are possible, but again we have to listen to businesses and tailor Gonave to what will be best for it's residents future.

I will have more information on talks I have had with businesses in the next few updates and blogs.

Go Gonave!
